Peter J. Bruno, M.D. Biography

Peter J. Bruno is attending physician at Lenox Hill Hospital and Beth Israel Hospital in New York City. He is the medical director for the Insall Scott Kelly Institute for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. Dr. Bruno currently is the internist for the New York Knickerbockers, the New York Yankees and the New York Liberty. He previously was the internist for the New York Rangers from 1981 to 1994, the New York Citihawks professional arena football team and the XFL football league, the NY Hitmen. He is the internist in charge of the medical aspects of the NBA’s Combine Physicals, and an internist for the finish line of the Boston Marathon. He is also associate professor of clinical medicine at the New York University School of Medicine.

Dr. Bruno received his medical degree from Hahnemann University, Philadelphia in 1975 and completed his internship and residency at Lenox Hill Hospital. In 1979, Dr. Bruno received the Upjohn Award for Academic Excellence. He was also honored with the Certificate of Appreciation for Outstanding Contributions by the Eye Bank for Sight Restoration.

Dr. Bruno is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is a member of several professional associations, including the American Medical Association and the American College of Physicians. Additionally, he is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and has served on their Board of Trustees. Dr. Bruno has written scientific papers that have appeared in respected medical journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Texas Heart Institute Journal, and Medicine and Science in Sports Exercise. He has written chapters in the Team Physician Handbook, the Spiral Manual of Sports Medicine and is the co-editor of the textbook, Sports Medicine: Primary Care and Rehabilitation. Dr. Bruno also is the Sports Medicine consultant for The Sporting Life (TSL) and The Golfer.

Dr. Bruno has been in private practice since 1979 and has appeared on Good Morning America, Good Day New York, CBS This Morning, Nightline and ABC World News Tonight.
